Asbestos Testing Process & What to Expect in Michigan

OUR PROCESS & WHAT TO EXPECT

What to Expect When You Request Asbestos or Mold Testing

Michigan Asbestos Testing provides professional, accredited asbestos testing, asbestos surveys, mold inspections, and mold air testing services throughout Michigan. Our process is designed to be clear, efficient, and compliant, with a focus on objective assessment and regulatory awareness.

As an independent, third-party consultant, we guide clients through each step so they know what to expect before, during, and after an inspection.

STEP 1: INITIAL CONTACT

Requesting Service

Email is the preferred method of contact, as it allows for review of project details and regulatory considerations. When reaching out, please include:

  • Property address and location
  • Approximate building age
  • Planned renovation or demolition scope (if applicable)
  • Any known water damage or environmental concerns

Phone calls are accepted, and voicemails will be returned as soon as possible. Messages are typically returned either the same or next business day.

STEP 2: PROJECT REVIEW & SCOPE

Review of Requirements

Once initial information is received, the scope of work is evaluated based on:

  • Property type and use
  • Planned activities
  • Applicable Michigan and federal requirements
  • Client objectives

This review helps determine whether asbestos testing, an asbestos survey, mold inspection, mold air testing, or a combination of services is appropriate.

STEP 3: ON-SITE INSPECTION & SAMPLING

Inspection and Sampling Process

In most cases, the site inspections and sampling is the first item scheduled (typically during the initial phone call). The site inspection can be completed faster if there is easy access to the house or building, either through a lockbox or known access point.

On-site services may include:

  • Visual inspection of accessible areas
  • Identification of suspect materials
  • Representative asbestos bulk sampling (when required)
  • Mold air sampling or surface sampling (when appropriate)

All sampling is performed using established methods and submitted to accredited laboratories for analysis.

STEP 4: LABORATORY ANALYSIS

Accredited Laboratory Testing

Collected samples are analyzed by accredited laboratories using recognized analytical methods. Laboratory results provide objective data regarding asbestos content or mold presence and concentrations.

Laboratory findings are interpreted within the context of observed conditions and applicable guidance.

Laboratory analysis takes three business days. Results can be rushed by the laboratory for a “rushed service” fee.

STEP 5: REPORTING & DOCUMENTATION

Clear, Professional Reports

Clients receive written documentation that clearly summarizes:

  • Inspection observations
  • Sampling locations and results
  • Applicable regulatory considerations
  • Conclusions relevant to the scope of work

Reports are prepared to support:

  • Regulatory compliance
  • Contractor documentation
  • Real estate transactions
  • Informed decision-making

These Asbestos Survey Reports provide clear, defensible documentation of what is and, potentially more importantly, what is not asbestos-containing material in the structure.

STEP 6: NEXT STEPS & CLARIFICATION

Understanding Your Results

Following delivery of results, clients may request clarification regarding findings or regulatory implications. As an independent consultant, our role is to help clients understand what the results mean—without selling remediation or removal services.

When necessary, reports can be shared with contractors, municipalities, or other professionals involved in the project.

Our inspection process is aligned with applicable Michigan asbestos regulations and testing requirements.
